Hennepin County's Transportation Operations Department is seeking a Public Works Foreman. This position will supervise, review, and evaluate the work of several crews engaged in road maintenance as well as snow and ice control operations.

Location and hours:
This position is located at the Public Works Facility, 1600 Prairie Drive in Medina, MN. There is no public transportation to this facility. Work hours vary seasonally, generally from four 10-hour days in summer to five 8-hour days in winter. The position requires rotating on call after hours duty, which includes weekdays, weekends, and holidays. Hours will vary during winter season based on snow and ice control needs.

About the position type:
This is a full-time, benefit earning position. You must be a current regular or probationary employee of the Public Works department to apply for this position. Limited duration employees are not eligible.
This position is internally classified as Public Works Foreman.

In this position, you will:
  • Supervise and oversee multiple employees/crews to include hiring, training and mentoring employees, review, and authorize timecards.
  • Instruct and provide training for crew members in work methods, use of tools and equipment and relevant safety precautions.
  • Inspect job sites to determine work required and to evaluate outcomes.
  • Estimate personnel, material, and equipment requirements for assigned jobs; order and maintain an adequate inventory of material; manage overtime and standing schedules.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of reports and records, including worksheets, accident reports and maintenance requests.
  • Respond to questions and complaints from the public, property owners, private contractors and others.

Need to have:

  • Five or more years of journey/lead worker level experience in highway/heavy operations, design, planning or construction.
    • Note: Completion of an approved job-related technical training program or 30 or more credits in job-related technical courses or public works management courses from an accredited school, college, or university may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
  • A valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with airbrake.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
Nice to have:
  • Experience with methods, materials, and equipment used in highway/heavy construction or transportation operations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office programs used to create documents, spreadsheets, reports and/or tables.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Ability to:
    • Manage and direct various levels of staff.
    • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with the general public, property owners, and private contractors.
    • Make decisions in a timely manner, based on analysis, experience, and judgment.
