About the Position



The Department of Planning and Economic Development is hiring a Project Management Technician to support the Planning Division. This role is a great opportunity to build hands-on experience working on planning initiatives that shape the future of Saint Paul, including development proposals, land use activities, and community planning efforts.

In this role, you’ll work closely with planning staff, internal partners, and the public to help coordinate projects, track progress, and support planning processes while ensuring work aligns with City policies, codes, and ordinances.

Here’s what you can expect to do:
  • Support planning projects by tracking timelines, gathering information, and helping keep work on schedule
  • Assist with development proposals, planning applications, and land use activities
  • Collect, organize, and report data related to planning initiatives and projects
  • Help coordinate meetings, public engagement activities, and planning communications
  • Respond to questions from community members, developers, and stakeholders regarding planning processes and requirements

Position Requirements

Associate’s Degree in Public Administration, Urban Planning, Community Development, Economics, Business Administration, Public Policy, Finance, or a closely related field;
OR
Two years of experience assisting with planning, housing, community development, economic development, or project/program administration work;

Assessment: Qualifications Rating

The Qualifications Rating is an assessment of your completed application and answers to the Supplemental Questionnaire. Be as specific and detailed as possible in completing your application and questionnaire. You must submit your completed application and supplemental questionnaire by the application deadline.

Promotion Only Job Posting: This posting is open to current City of Saint Paul employees who meet the Civil Service promotion rule, which includes two years certified service. The promotion eligible list is ranked. Those who pass the assessment will be placed on an eligible list for approximately six months.

Promotion Final Selection Process: You must receive a score of 75% or higher to pass the assessment and be considered for the position. Those who pass will be placed on an eligible list and all will be notified of their status. A Hiring Manager will consider those applicants eligible for hire based on civil service rules. You will be notified if you are invited to participate in the final selection process which may include an interview, job simulation, work sample submission, or other evaluation method.

Pre-Employment Screening: This position requires a background check which may include criminal history, and employment history as a condition of employment. Candidates will be required to submit proof of education to Human Resources upon conditional job offer, if qualifying based on education.
